Iron Heart IHSH-439 BLK Review — 9oz Selvedge Flannel Check Western Shirt
If you know Iron Heart, you know their Ultra Heavy Flannel shirts — the 12oz and 14oz monsters built for winter. The IHSH-439 takes a different approach. At 9oz, it's Iron Heart's lighter-weight flannel offering, designed as a breathable alternative for warmer months without sacrificing the craftsmanship and Japanese manufacturing the brand is known for.

This season's plaids are something of a "greatest hits" — Iron Heart drew the colourway for the IHSH-439 from one of their most popular checks in recent memory, the IHSH-335-BLK from FW22. Where earlier 9oz flannels were rope- and sulphur-dyed to allow for fading over time, this fabric is woven with reactive-dyed yarns for a more colourfast finish — the check stays sharp rather than softening with wear.
Fabric
The IHSH-439 is made from 9oz Japanese selvedge flannel, 100% cotton — woven at one of only four remaining mills in Japan capable of producing these intricate check patterns, switching the weft yarn mid-weave to build the plaid.

The garment goes through a post-construction industrial wash before it ships, which takes out virtually all of the shrinkage you'd otherwise see on the first few washes. From there, treat it the way you'd treat any of Iron Heart's flannels: wash at 30°C on a low or no spin cycle, hang dry, don't tumble dry.
Cut & Construction
Unlike the regular-fit work shirt cut of Iron Heart's standard flannels, the IHSH-439 is built on their slimmer western shirt block, with a curved hem, flap-down chest pockets and pearl snap fastenings (fitted with YKK snaps) in place of buttons.

The construction spec is full Iron Heart — chainstitching, bar-tack reinforcement at the stress points, selvedge detailing on the placket and cuffs. It's cut slimmer than their work shirts, but built to exactly the same standard. As with any slim western cut, if you're in between sizes or carry a bit more through the shoulders and arms, it's worth checking the size chart rather than defaulting to your usual Iron Heart size.
One thing worth knowing before you buy: the pale overcheck running through the black is genuinely hard to pin down in photos — even longtime Iron Heart collectors go back and forth between reading it as light blue, lavender, or a cooler grey-blue. Lighting and screen colour will shift it, so don't be surprised if it reads a little differently once it's in your hands than it did on the product shot.
